Gurdon Go-Devils remain undefeatedBY REBECCA S. COOPERPublished Wednesday, September 18, 2002 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's Go-Devils shut-out the Lewisville Red Devils in Friday nights game. Proving Friday the 13th unlucky for the Red Devils, the Go-Devils rewarded the fans who had traveled with a 26-0 score. In the first quarter, Heath Griffin with support from the starting line-up completed a pass with 3:48 left in the quarter to earn the first touchdown of the night. Hunter Johnson made a hard tackle with a crunching sound heard from the visitors bleachers before the first quarter ran out. An incomplete pass started the second quarter, but just a minute and a half on the clock the earned a first down. Cevin Laster ran the yards for the next down getting the Go-Devils to the 20 yardline. Just within reach of the end zone, 5 Davion Williams was stopped by a dog-pile of Red Devils at the nine yardline. The offensive line followed up with a touchdown which brought jeers from the Go-Devil fans when a penalty was called. With the score standing at 8-0 Gurdon-Lewisville, Jake Plyler made a hard tackle holding the line. K.P. Meeks was noticeable in holding the line as the Red Devils tried to push back the Go-Devils with 5:02 left in the quarter. After this the Go-Devils earned the second touchdown putting the score at 14-0, Gurdon over Lewisville. As the Red Devils took the kickoff which wobbly rolled 40 yards or so down the field. As the line of scrimmage reformed at the 40 yard line, Laster implemented a play with a hard drive right up the center of the Red Devils' defense. Following this up to complete the first down was Barry Todd Nolan with 2:18 left in the first half. Griffin completed a long pass to give Gurdon one more down before halftime, with the score showing 14-0. The first down of the second half was earned by Meeks. Working at the 30-yard line, made down after down until with 7:40 in the third quarter Laster made a touchdown putting the score at 20-0, Go-Devils over Red Devils. The Red Devils were working hard to score anything so the Go-Devils wouldn't have it easy or get a complete shut-out. Even the bands began to duel and raise some volume. The Go-Devils held the Red Devils off their attempts to take a first down. Kelley followed this up with an estimated 60-yard run to the end zone for what would have been a touchdown. The fans cheered and then jeered when referees called a penalty on Williams for holding. The whole team executed a play allowing Kelley to earn a down while carrying four Red Devils before landing under the pile of them with 4:39 left in the third quarter. Then the game got exciting when Plyler connected a crisp pass to Griffin bring in the last touchdown of the game. The score at the end of the third quarter, as well as the end of the game would be 26-0, Gurdon over Lewisville. But before the end of the third quarter, Johnson made the crowd gasp at a tackling hit which carried it's crunching of pads up to the stands with 3:31 left on the clock. The Red Devils had a fumble and then another. Griffin and Nolan worked a snapped pass to the right, pleasing the fans. Meeks made a down with a good rush bringing the Go-Devils to the 30-yard line. The Red Devils struggled while the bands worked on one-upping each other. The Devils held the field as the Devils team held every attempt by Lewisville. Brandon Sanders and Griffin found themselves under a hay bale sized dog pile of Red Devils as they did make a down with 8:46 remaining in the game. With 6:55 left in the game, the Go-Devils took a penalty on John Watson for a late hit. Watson followed with a good cold-stopping of the Red Devils quarter back. Notably, Justin Bell plowed a wide path for Nolan as the game wore to an end. Nolan and Griffin completed another pass which brought Gurdon to a total of 24 downs total with only 3:27 left. Laster completed a play at the very last of the game with a little zigzagging as the last penalty of the evening was called on Watson for blocking below the waist. The game ended, Gurdon had won, and Coach John Pace commented to the team and those gathered in the field before dismissing, "We'll take this win, but you gotta' play hard no matter what we're doing." Pace continued, "I wasn't please with the first half. We have three more home games, (Springhill- Sept. 20; Mt. Pine- Sept. 27; and Murfreesboro- Oct. 4) if we play hard we'll win all three at home."
