BISMARCK 13
Published Wednesday, April 14, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayunePRESCOTT 3 A bad first inning put the Wolves in a catch-up situation for the rest of the game Tuesday, April 6, when they played Bismarck. The Lions opened the game with seven runs in the top of the first to put Prescott's team on its heels. The game opened with two straight walks, followed by an RBI single. Another single brought in the second run before Wolf pitching was able to record two straight outs. But, Prescott has had problems closing innings all season and this one was no different. With two down, back-to-back singles brought in two more runs and kept the bases loaded. A double brought three more in before Prescott got out of the inning. Prescott's offense went down in order. Inning number two was quiet for both teams as each got runners on, but neither could move them across. Bismarck added four more in the top of the third. The frame opened with a single. This was followed by a strike out, but a double brought in the first batter. The fourth batter in the inning went down on strikes, and the bottom again fell out for the Wolves The next batter singled one in. This was followed by a walk and a two-RBI single. The inning ended with the runner getting tagged trying to make it to second. Prescott managed to load the bases in the bottom of the third. Bullock began with a single, with Ralph Marlow getting hit by a pitch with one down. Ronnie Nolen walked to load the bases, but the next two batters were fanned to end the threat. The fourth saw the Lions add one more to their tally with a single and three walks. Prescott's offense woke up briefly in the bottom of the fourth as Harris walked and Morman went yard to give the Wolves their only two runs of the contest. This cut the lead to 12-2, but wasn't nearly enough to keep Prescott in the game. The Lions finished scoring in the game with two in the fifth on an error, a walk and two singles. Nolen led off the bottom of the fifth with a single. Jarrod Miller was then hit by a pitch, with Yates grounding out, but driving Nolen in. Harris walked, but the next two went down in order to end the game. Bullock was the losing pitcher, going three innings, giving up 11 runs on 10 hits, walking four and fanning four. Nolen spent two innings on the hill. He allowed three runs on three hits, walked four and struck one out. Meyers earned the win for Bismarck, going the distance for the Lions. He gave up three runs on three hits, walked four and struck eight out. The Lions took the JV game 9-8. Crow had no excuses for the Bismarck contest, saying the Wolves were beaten by a better team. "Being off 12 days really hurt us," he said. The 12 day break included rain, spring break and parent-teacher conferences. "Bismarck's spring break was a week earlier than ours, so they were playing last week while we were off. You could really tell it, too." He said the Lions came ready to play, while the Wolves looked to still be on spring break. The seven-run first hurt, but after it, he said, the game was 7-3. Bismarck was able to get the big two-out hits, while the Wolves were again unable to close innings without allowing their foe to score. Seven of Bismarck's runs came with two down in the contest. According to Crow, Bullock didn't pitch bad as the Lions didn't hit the ball hard against him. However, the ball appeared to have eyes as it went where Wolves weren't. Crow credited Nolen for two good innings of work on the hill. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
