A special school board meeting was held Thursday, August 6. Members of the board thought it was necessary to meet and discuss four topics.

The first topic being discussed was the appointment of a new school board member for Zone 9.

Charles Hatley was holding the position, but due to his job he was unable to attend meetings as needed. Hatley resigned and the board agreed to appoint someone until Hatley's term was up next year.

The board's first recommendation was Otis Duncan who declined the nomination.

Board member David Williams then talked to David Hunter who agreed to accept the position. The board all approved to accept Hunter. His first meeting will be in October.

Andy Bell a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church had recently asked Gurdon Superintendent Bobby Smithson if his church could purchase a block of tickets to the football games and then resell them to make a profit as a church project.

Smithson said he did not have a problem with this since the school would not be taking a risk of loss.

Board member Billy Tarpley expressed his concern as to whether high school athletic functions were protected under ticket scalping laws. Smithson said he would check into it if Tarpley felt it was necessary.

The board members didn't see a problem with selling the tickets to Bell and the motions was made and seconded to sell Bell the block of tickets he requested.

Recently the district proposed raising ticket prices at school functions to $4 for adults and charging the same price for children and students.

Smithson said, "We just raised our prices last year to $4 for adults and $3 for children and students. I do not feel that it is necessary to do it again. The athletic department almost paid for itself last year with the ticket raise; however I do not want to raise them on our fans this soon."

Board members agreed with Smithson and the motion passed to leave the ticket prices as they are.

Smithson announced the Annual Public School Board meeting would be held on September 17.

"This is the same night as the school board elections. We will have our original members there that night and the new ones will be sworn in at the October meeting," Smithson said.

The first hour of September's meeting will be regular business with the second hour being open to the public for questions or comments.
