Petitions submitted for Gurdon School BoardBY AUTUMN PENNINGTONPublished Wednesday, August 21, 2002 in the Gurdon Times Several petitions were turned in for the four vacant positions on the Gurdon School Board. Tommy Overbey has served on the board for several years, but recently decided he would run for re-election this fall. Overbey is in Zone 11. Two legal petitions were turned in from his zone. Mike Leamons and Stephen Mark Sanford are the only two to be on the ballot with opposition. Jesse Runyan was appointed to Zone 14's position after the last school board election, which is not Runyan's zone. If no one is running for a position in a certain zone or the spot is left vacant, the board is allowed to appoint someone to the position. This was the case for Runyan. After Stan Escalante's resignation from the board, Runyan is able to run in his zone, which is 12. Brad Clark will be running for the position in Zone 14. Zone 13 was left vacant after the resignation of Jim Otwell. Cheryl Reed has turned in her petition to be placed on September's ballot. She is also running unopposed. Each petition was required to have 20 qualified voters names from the zone the candidate is running for. The election will be held on September 17, 2002.
