Emmet prepares for school yearBY MARY LEEPublished Wednesday, August 14, 2002 in the Nevada County Picayune Plans for the new school year are underway at Emmet. The Emmet School Board met Monday August 5 in its regular monthly meeting. A financial statement was given by Dr. Gene Ross, superintendent. Ross said Emmet schools's budget is in good shape. The primary school Principle Floyd Pollock gave his monthly report saying the new handbooks were finished with no major changes. He also acknowledged the high enrollment in the new Preschool program beginning this year. Principle Shade Gilbert gave the High School report with no major changes. He announced the Agriculture department has been expanding. He also said a new AP Biology course will be given through Arkansas School of Math and Science. Ross gave his superintendents report requesting the approval of Dennis Washington, motivational speaker, to appear the first week of school. Washington spoke at the school last year, he said, and everyone loved him. The board passed a motion stating it would pay Washington $250 to speak at the beginning of school. Tuition agreements were passed between the Nevada School District and Emmet, also four children were admitted into the district from the Hope area. Ross gave an update on the new building saying he hoped it would be ready before labor day. The building will house new classrooms and used as a storm shelter in case of a tornado. The board then exited into executive session where a decision was made to hire a new teacher, however according to Ross, the teacher was still under contract and was unable to take the job.
