Silent, live auction slated by Gurdn's ChamberBY AUTUMN PENNINGTONPublished Wednesday, August 14, 2002 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's Chamber of Commerce will be holding a silent/live auction and dinner on August 15, 2002. The proceeds will be divided in half with one part going to benefit the Gurdon Chamber Commerce and the rest towards the Gurdon Auditorium and Music Complex. The auditorium has been in the works for some time and will be worth $3.5 million. The new auditorium will be able to seat 1,200 and will have a stage area. A hall of memories is also to be built into one wall of the auditorium for displaying trophies and graduating class composite photos. It is planned to build space for the administrative offices to be moved from it's location at the old high school, to the new auditorium. The facility will also hold a choir room, a band complex, and a cheerleader room. Chairman Anita Cabe, for the "Raise the Curtain" project, is confident in raising the funds needed to build the auditorium. In the past six years the Gurdon School District has built a new high school, new middle school, PE Gym, a pavilion, football stadium with a track and field house, high school gym, art building, cafetorium and band building, softball field and did $1.3 million of renovations on the primary school. So far $375,000 has been raised towards the auditorium. Several items have been gathered for the silent and live auctions. Some items include: youth turkey gun, donated by Larry Thomerson, a weekend stay at Hochatown Junction Resorts at Broken Bow, Okla., $100 gift certificate to Dr. Frank Teed, a pool party and cookout for 12, a Hoo-Hoo gift box, a Gurdon Centennial Album, Antiques, a round of golf at Turtle Point, a quilt made and donated by Linda Calley, a night's stay at the Captain Henderson House, a house cleaning, autographed items from Gov. Mike Huckabee, an autographed picture from Billy Bob Thornton and several other items. Anyone interested in attending can purchase tickets for $7.
