Cannon honored for efforts; students to transfer to PrescottBY MARY LEEPublished Wednesday, June 26, 2002 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott High School's agricultural teacher received the Outstanding Agri Teacher Award for the state. This was announced at the Prescott School Board on Tuesday, June 18. James Cannon, agriculture teacher for PHS was recognized for his award from the state. Cannon was presented the AVATA Outstanding Ag Teacher Award for the 2002 school year in June from the State FFA Convention. The board announced Cannon is in the running for regional teacher of the year against individuals from seven other states. If Cannon wins at regional he will be recognized at the National Convention in Las Vegas next December. The board then discussed a needed approval to accept a bid from Ward Transportation Service Inc. to purchase a new school bus. The bid, Wright said, was $46,925 and was the lowest bid given. The board approved the purchase of two new buses from this company using budgets from the 2002 school year and 2003. According to Superintendent Ron Wright, the buses are on the lot, and after a carry case is added underneath, the buses could be picked up. Bids for cafeteria food was also passed during the meeting, the board approved bread purchases from Ideal Bread and milk from the Highland Milk Company. Pearl Bailey, from the Prescott District Education Association, spoke briefly about the plans for the PDEA. Bailey said the organization would like to place a banner in the new sports arena so other schools could see Prescott was supported by the PDEA. She said the PDEA has decided to become more visible. "You will see PDEA more in the future," she said. Bailey said her organization would offer 20 workshops for the district in the next year at no additional cost to the district. Hyacinth Deon gave a quick announcement concerning the Summer Enrichment Program. The program is for students recommended by teachers who would benefit from the program. The program is designed to help students in problem areas and also provides a breakfast and lunch, free of charge, to the students. The board approved two students wanting to transfer into the district. The students' family has recently moved to Blevins and the mother wanted to bring the children to school in Prescott every day. The board then went into executive session. According to Deon, the board discussed and approved the hiring of Kathy Smith, of Arkadelphia, for the new math teacher at McRae Middle School. This was the last meeting to be held under the direction of Superintendent, Ron Wright. Deon will assume the duties of superintendent on an interim basis until a superintendent is hired.
