Fourth of July celebration set for Gurdon's City Park, GHSBY AUTUMN PENNINGTONPublished Wednesday, June 26, 2002 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon residents can enjoy Fourth of July festivities right here at home. For the first time, Gurdon will be holding a July 4th celebration with the help of the Gurdon Chamber of Commerce, Sexton Foods, Gurdon Public Schools, and the 21st Century Community Learning Center. Sexton Foods will be sponsoring a fishing tournament from 8-10 a.m. on the Fourth at the Gurdon Lake. Prizes and refreshments will be provided at the tournament by Sexton's. If you are interested in some air conditioned fun, then you will want to be at the Gurdon High School cafetorium at 7 p.m. Alan Wimberly, Gurdon Band Director, will be performing patriotic and gospel songs along with several other Gurdon residents. Art work by some Gurdon Primary students will be on display. Door prizes will also be given away. Free hot dogs will be given out at the Band Booster concession stand. Other refreshments will be available for sale. A professional firework show will begin at 9 p.m. at Go-Devil Stadium. The show is scheduled to last 20 minutes. The Community Involvement Committee is in need of individuals who would be willing to help decorate the cafetorium and the concession stand. It is also looking for volunteers to help with the hot dogs. Also, any donation from community members to help purchase the fireworks would be appreciated. Anyone wanting to make a donation may write a check out to Gurdon Public Schools and mail it to Jean Smithey at Gurdon Public Schools, 314 School St., Gurdon, Ark. 71743, or call (870) 353-5126.
