Time is winding down for those planning to enter the athletic events at the 15th Annual Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce Chicken and Egg Festival.

Mary Godwin, executive director of the Chamber, said anyone planning on entering the weight lifting, tennis tourney, softball tourney, three-on-three basketball tournament or horseshoe contest should do so as soon as possible.

The festival will kick off at 5 p.m. Friday, June 7,withthe Rotary Club's Chicken in the Rough Dinner at the pavilion.

Tickets for this event are $5 each and can be purchased from any member of the club, or at the Chamber.

The Rotary Club uses the money from this fundraiser to finance its projects throughout the year.

This will be followed by the annual variety show, chaired by Brandi Karlovec.

The variety show will be held at the festival stage, and feature local dancers, singers and bands, as well as acts from around the region. Those attending the show should bring their lawn chairs as the entertainment will run from 5-9 p.m.

While this is going on, Godwin said, the arts and craft booths will be open, as will the concession stands.

Saturday gets off to an early start with the Kiwanis Club's Old Time Country Breakfast at the pavilion.

Chow time will be from 7:30-9:30 a.m. Tickets can be bought from any club member, at the Chamber or at the breakfast.

Next on the list is the annual 5K race. Preregistration fees are $12, with it costing $15 to enter the day of the race. The race starts at 8 a.m.

After the 5K will be the children's Chase the Chicken fun run. Entry fees for this are $5 per child, with all contestants getting medals and a t-shirt.

The softball tournaments, both men's and women's, will continue Saturday. The men will play at Bemis Field, while the women will be at McRae Field inside the park.

It will cost $125 per team for the softball tourneys, with the top teams getting trophies, and all players getting t-shirts.

There will be four divisions for the Calvin Brown Memorial Tyson Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament. The first will be for boys 12 and under, then for those 13-14 and 15-17 years of age.

The men's teams will be 18 and older.

The entry fee will be $30 for the boys teams and $60 for the men's teams.

Individual trophies will be awarded to the top teams, with all players in the boys division getting t-shirts.

In the men's tourney, the winning team will receive $250, with the runner up getting $100.

Teams will consist of three players and one alternate.

For the tennis tourney, there will be men's and women's singles and doubles. The entry fee for singles play is $15, with the fee for doubles being $25.

B.J. Hampton is chairman of the event, or those wanting to enter can contact the Chamber.

Trophies will be presented to the top two finishers in each of the four divisions. Players are required to furnish their own tennis balls.

Women will compete in two weight classes in the weightlifting contest. One class will be for those 150 and below, and the other for 151 and above.

Entry fee is $10 per person, with the top three lifters in each class getting a t-shirt and cash prize of $25.

There will be four divisions in the men's portion. It will range from 150 and below, 151-180, 181-210, and 211 and up.

However, Godwin said, if there aren't at least five lifters in each division, the weight classes will be combined.

Judging will be done on three lifts, with lifters required to touch and lock in the bench press.

The horseshoe contest will be held across the street from the park, with Gary Brown in charge.

New horseshoe pits were dug and concreted last year. The contest will be held at 1:30 p.m., with registration to start at 1 o'clock.

There is a $5 entry fee, and there will be both singles and doubles played. Trophies will be presented to the top two finishers in each division.

The second annual Artesian Arts League Art Show will be held Friday and Saturday during the festival. Work from local and area artists will be on display at the Broadway Restaurant.

For more information, contact Penny Richards or the Chamber.

There will be plenty to do aside from the sporting events. At 9:30 a.m. Saturday will be the balloon liftoff.

This event is for people of all ages. Contestants will put their name, address and phone number on balloons, which will be released. The first person who's balloon is found and a call back is made will receive a free t-shirt.

There is a $100 cash prize waiting for the person(s) who find the golden egg. Clues will be given at 10 a.m. at the festival stage.

Godwin said this year's egg is a small one painted gold, just to make it more interesting.

An egg toss contest will be held at 10:15 a.m. at the stage. This is also for people of all ages, with the winners getting t-shirts.

At 10:45 a.m. there will be a jump rope contest at the stage. Again, this is for all ages, with the winner getting a festival t-shirt.

A hula hoop contest follows at 11 o'clock, for all ages, with the same prize up for grabs.

A new event will take place at 11:30 a.m., the Mr. and Mrs. Prize Drumstick Contest. Eight men and eight women will be secreted behind a curtain, with the audience to pick the winner by examining their legs from the knee down.

Winners will receive a trophy. After this, the audience will be asked to guess who's legs are on display.

The cackling and crowing contest will be held at noon at the stage. There is no entry fee, but there will be two divisions, one for adults and one for youth.

Winners in this event will receive cash prizes. First place nets $25, with $15 for second place and $10 for third.

The Little Mister Rooster and Little Miss Hen Pageant will be held on stage at 2 p.m. All contestants must pre-register, and there is a $15 fee. For more information, or to register, call the Chamber.

The festival wraps up with the Little Britches Rodeo at the Nevada County Fairgrounds at 6 p.m. This event is sponsored by the FFA Alumni.

Admission will be $3 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.

There will be a calf flag race for those six and under, and 7-12.

This will be followed by a boys calf tying contest, with the divisions being 14 and below and 15-18.

Next will be the boys calf riding, for boys 8-10.

Barrel racing will be next for those 13 and under, and 14-18; with a barrel pickup event for those 18 and under.

A chute dogging event is set for those 18 and under, as is a hide slide.

Muttin' bustin' will be for children seven and under, with a limit of 30.

Girls aren't being forgotten as they will be trying to tie a ribbon on a goat. This will be for girls 13 and under, and 14-18.

Steer riding will end the night for cowpokes 11-14 and 15-18.

Registration will be done from 1-4 p.m. at the Fairgrounds Saturday, June 8.

Parents must enter, pay and sign a release at the time of registration.

Entry fees will be $10, with the exception of the flag race, which is $2. All events are limited to 15 contestants, again except for the flag race.
