Curley Cubs Sting StampsPublished Wednesday, September 15, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneA stingy defense kept the Stamps Yellow Jackets to only six points in the opening game of the season for the Curley Cubs. In fact, the defense was so tight the Jackets only gained a paltry 17 yards in the contest. When the dust settled, Prescott was on the good side of the 22-6 score. According to Cub Coach David Maxwell, freshmen Craig Teague and Martell Woodley wound up with more than 10 tackles each. Eighth grade outside linebackers, Jason Butler and R.J. Vanhook, shored up their side of the defense. Overall, Maxwell said, the team has five first year players. The others are Carl Zeigler, Jeremy Purifoy and Joseph Stewart. All played well in their first game, he said. The offense opened up against Stamps, running up 393 total yards. Michael Tribbett led the ground game with 137 yards on 14 carries, while scoring two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. He caught one pass for 12 yards as well. Josh Brown, the freshman quarterback, was five for 13 on the night for 73 yards, including a two-point conversion pass to Woodley. Brown also rushed four times for 30 yards in the contest. Teague added 31 yards on three carries with a touchdown. Woodley had 14 yards on three carries, and a three-yard PAT reception. Stewart led all receivers with 48 yards on two catches. The kicking game wasn't bad either as Chris Hunt averaged 35 yards per punt. "The Cubs put on a good show with only a few first game mistakes," Maxwell said. From there, the Cubs went to hope to tangle with the Bobkittens. Maxwell said it was a good game for his charges, though three mistakes allowed the Kittens to score 16 quick points at the end of the first half. The Cubs weren't able to recover from this lead. A 34-yard punt by Hunt was returned 66-yards for a score, while a controversial fumble gave the Kittens the ball at the Prescott one. This lead to a second touchdown as the end of the first half. Defensively, the Cubs held Hope to 187 total yards, 163 rushing and 14 passing. Prescott's offense garnered 140 yards, all on the ground. Vanhook led all rushers for Prescott with 45 yards on six carries. Brown was 0-3 in passing and had a negative 14 yards rushing. The Cubs will be at Fordyce Thursday at 7 p.m. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
