New books are boughtBY MARY LEEPublished Wednesday, May 15, 2002 in the Nevada County Picayune Emmet School Board met Monday May 6 to discuss new books, graduation, and our Nation's motto. Jena Richardson addressed the board about a program by American Family Association. The AFA is encouraging schools across the nation to display the nations motto, "In God We Trust," in every classroom. Richardson told the board no money would come out of the school funds, she had donations from citizens in the community, to purchase the posters and frames to decorate the school walls. The board passed a motion to allow Richardson to work on the program. Richardson said the posters should arrive in time to hang next fall. The board passed a motion to purchase new books for the elementary students. The teachers of Emmet elementary voted and choose a book by Harcourt publishers. According to elementary school principle, Floyd Pollock, the books focus on writing skills which is a key part of the Benchmark tests. The board discussed plans for high school graduation, which will be held May 17, at 8 p.m. The board also discussed kindergarten graduation May 30 and eighth grade graduation May 31.
