Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, April 14, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesWe really enjoyed the warmer weather last week. We felt spring! Several classrooms had the heat turned off and the air conditioning turned on, which made it very comfortable for students and teachers. We are constantly finding the building so modern and convenient. From where we moved from the "old, old" and the "old" middle schools, this building has luxury, just simple pure luxury! In the other two buildings, we had window air conditioning units and still needed fans in the rooms to help circulate the cool air. Noise? You bet! With the noise from the air conditioner and fans, teachers were talking louder than their usual volume just to be heard in the rooms. Therefore, we are really enjoying the comfort of the Cabe Middle School. Mrs. Green's and Mrs. Clingan's first period classes and several other eighth graders, enjoyed hearing a bicyclist, Tyler Durham, from New Hampshire tell about his adventure as he is riding his bike from New Hampshire to California. He is to meet friends who are traveling by boat and they plan to go to Alaska for the summer to work. Tyler explained how the trip has allowed him to meet so many wonderful people whom he will treasure, as well as being able to see the United States in such a different way. The special shoes he wears allows the small pedals to lock into the soles of the shoes, thus making the ride a lot less tiring. He wears a safety helmet and sunglasses. The glasses also prevents the wind from hurting his eyes. He has been hit by a car one time, although not causing major injury to himself. His bike did not escape damage. He had to have a new handlebar. It was most interesting as to how he obtained the new item. The town in which he entered had one bike repair shop and it was closed on the day he was there. However, he met a person who knew the owner and called him and explained Tyler's situation. The shop was opened and the new handlebar installed with no cost to Tyler. Hospitality of America! The students asked him several questions, which he answered to their satisfaction. He was greatly enjoyed and our best wishes for his safe journey. We have his e-mail address and plan to stay in touch with him on his journey. Stuck up! High hat! What ever label is attached to someone who works closely with someone five days a week and one refuses to speak to the other until forced to. Well it happened. Difficult to believe? Yes, I agree. Disappointing? Yes, I agree. One can only hope this will not occur again, especially if her mom is with Brian's wife who's teaching English. Enough said! The new benches look great. Some of the students have worked hard to assemble 11 benches for the enjoyment of the student body. The benches were made available from a grant from the CONE Foundation. We really do appreciate them. We had a wonderful treat after Easter. On the table in the teacher's work area, there was a chocolate cake with green coconut around the bottom and jelly beans about the feet of the rabbit, which was the shape of the cake. The only thing missing were the ears! Can you imagine a rabbit with no ears? We knew immediately that the cake once had ears, as the impression of the ears were still on the container with the remaining cake. Did that stop that cake from disappearing? Goodness, no! The old commercial that "Mikey will eat anything" applies to the CMS teachers also! It was great cake and enjoyed by all who were fortunate enough to get there early. Students have been busy trying to get caught up on missed assignments when they were out with the virus. We do hope that old bug has left us for good. Fifth, sixth and seventh grade students with a 2.8 GPA who are interested in running for office in the CMS Student Council have been busy getting their petitions signed by classmates in support of their choice of office. The next Student Council assembly will have those students give their speeches for their office of choice and then the campaigning begins. We are busy, and find it difficult to believe that school will be out next month. My goodness gracious where has the time gone? We are anxious to hear from our former students who went to Washington, D.C., on the Close Up program. Maybe some of them can find time to talk to our students about their trip and add to our Classy Moments at CMS. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
