Festival fun right around the corner

T-shirts for the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce's 15th Annual Chicken and Egg Festival are on sale now.

Shirts are the same price as last year, and can be either ordered or purchased at the Chamber.

Mary Godwin, executive director of the Chamber, suggests people hurry as the festival is less than a month away.

This year's festival will be held June 7-8, at the Prescott City Park.

Godwin said the fun will start at 6:30 p.m. Friday and end with the rodeo at 6 p.m. Saturday.

No changes have been made for the athletic events, she said. The tennis tournament, softball tournaments and three-on-three basketball tourney will again grace the park and Bemis Field. The weight lifting contest will also be held at the park.

Once again, the pony and train rides will grace the festival. These events have proven to be favorites of the younger set over the years.

There will again be plenty of variety in the arts and crafts displays, Godwin said. Booth space is still available, and local artisans and crafters are being encouraged to rent a booth and put their wares on display. Booth space will be $25 per booth for both days.

For the second year in a row the Artesian Arts League will have an art show, featuring work from local artists. This event will be held at the Broadway Cafi.

One of the new events will be a NASCAR remote control racing facility.

Godwin said Speedway Entertainment will be bringing in the setup, which will be housed under a 24-foot tent. Inside the tent will be a circular track where local RC and NASCAR enthusiasts can see who's the most skilled.

However, though the races will go on all day Saturday, only three "drivers" will be racing at a time, and there is a fee. Speedway Entertainment will provide the remote control cars to make the races more even.

An interesting new event is the Mr. and Mrs. Drumstick Contest. Eight men and women will be selected and taken behind a screen on the festival stage. The only part visible will be from the knees down, with the audience's reaction determining the winner who had the best drumsticks.

The audience will also be encouraged to try and guess who the contestants are, simply by looking at their lower legs.

The festival will again feature the Little Mister Rooster and Little Miss Hen pageants. This year's "pageant wardrobe" for the Little Miss Hen contestants will be pants and shirts, while the Little Mr. Rooster hopefuls will be wearing shorts and a shirt.

This contest will also be held on the stage Saturday afternoon.

The festival will again kick off with the Rotary Club's Chicken in the Rough dinner Friday evening, followed by the variety show.

Anyone wanting to be in the variety show should contact Brandi Karlovec, or the Chamber.

Godwin said those planning to enter the sporting events should also come by the Chamber and get applications.
