Four Gurdon High Students Selected As Boys State Reps Four Gurdon HighPublished Wednesday, April 14, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesSchool students have been selected as delegates to Boys State. They are Bryan Anderson, Brandon Gattis, Andrew Wilson and Martin Downey. Anderson is the 16-year-old son of Eddie and Cynthia Anderson. He is a member of Beta Club, FFA and is attending Close-Up in Washington, D.C. Anderson is an active member of Beech Street Baptist Church. He is looking forward to Boys State and is honored to have been chosen. Gattis is the son of Jimmy and Sharon Gattis. He is a member of Beta Club and a member of the Gurdon FBLA. He is a three-year letterman of the senior high baseball team and a two-year letterman in senior high football. Gattis is a three-time member of the U.S. Academic Achievement Academy and a recipient of Who's Who Among High School Students. He is participating in the Close-Up program in Washington, D.C. He is a member of First Baptist Church, where he is active in the youth group. Wilson is the 16-year-old son of Roy and Elizabeth Wilson. He is an active member of the GHS bands, including marching, concert and jazz bands. He has recently attended the National Youth Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C. Wilson is currently in the eleventh grade and hope to attend college at USMA and major in military science. Downey is the 17-year-old son of Nick and Kay Downey. He is a member of Beta Club, FBLA, gifted and talented and of Close-Up. He attends First United Methodist Church and is an active youth member. Downey has participated in Odyssey of the Mind and Quiz Bowl. He is looking forward to attending Boys State this summer. Sponsors for Boys State are the American Legion, Gurdon Rotary Club, Austin and Mary Lou Capps and First State Bank. Boys State is a six-day training program teaching citizenship, democracy and government. Boys State will be held on the campus of University of Central Arkansas in Conway from May 30 to June 4.
