After son's suicide couple dedicates lives to othersBY AUTUMN PENNINGTONPublished Wednesday, April 17, 2002 in the Gurdon Times A few years ago Charlie and Shirley Cooper were shocked when they found out their teenage son had done the unthinkable. He had taken his own life. Since that time, Charlie and Shirley have dedicated themselves to finding ways to help other teens before it is to late. The Cooper's formed an annual fishing tournament in their son's name and proceeds are given to the Youth and Teen Crisis Center out of Fayetteville, which serves the whole state of Arkansas. "Our son loved fishing along with basketball; his death was such a shock to us all that we wanted to try and reach kids that might be having stressful times in their lives, and no one to talk to. We want these kids to know that there is help out there for them and they can be helped with any problem they may have. All they have to do is call," said Charlie. The Anthony Cooper Memorial Bass Tournament will be held on Saturday, May 11 from 5-11 p.m. at the DeGray Lake Spillway Ramp near Arkadelphia. There will be an Entry fee of $40 per team and a $10 optional Big Bass Pot. There will also be a $50 cash prize for the bass weighing closest to the target weight. Fishing tackle of all sorts will be given away to all paid entrants. During the three years the tournament was first started, the turnout has really grown. Last year it doubled in size and the Cooper's say it will continue to grow. "It is for a good cause and benefits everyone," Charlie said. Anyone wishing to donate or participate in this event cal call Charlie or Shirley at (501) 384-5354 or email them at didebyte@catc.net.
