Changes made in Egg HuntBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, March 20, 2002 in the Nevada County Picayune It's almost time for the 8th Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Mary Godwin, executive director of the Chamber, said the hunt will take place from 10 a.m. until noon, Saturday, March 30, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Approximately 2,600 eggs will be hidden for the four age groups to hunt around the Potlatch building, weather permitting. It rained last year, driving the "hunt" inside, where it turned out to be a huge success. Again this year, the eggs will be "stuffed" with candy and prizes, with a "golden" egg to be hidden in each of the four divisions. The child finding the golden egg will get a stuffed rabbit to take home. Godwin said the age divisions will be 1-2, hunting at 10 a.m.; 3-4, hunting at 10:30 a.m.; 5-7, hunting at 11 a.m.; and 8-9, hunting at 11:30 a.m. While the different groups are out hunting eggs, there will be plenty of other activities to keep those waiting busy and having a good time. One such event is new this year, an Easter bonnet/hat contest. Judges will examine the contestants's head-wear and pick the best looking. The winner gets $10. There is no entry fee or pre-registration required for the Easter bonnet/hat contest. This contest will be handled in the same manner as the Easter egg hunt, by division, in fact using the same divisions. Contestants are required, though, to show up 15 minutes before their scheduled hunting time for the contest. The Easter bonnet/hat contest is sponsored by Alliance Insurance. Another new event will be the "rabbit race" held inside the Potlatch building. Those interested in racing rabbits do not need to bring live animals to the contest. Godwin said wind-up rabbits will be used for the race. Other events include face painting, a duck pond, ping pong toss, ring toss and a go-fish game. Godwin said children will also have the option of guessing how many jelly beans are in a jar. The jelly bean contest is sponsored by McLelland Construction. First United Methodist Church will again provide refreshments. This year that will include hot dogs and soda. Weather permitting, Godwin said, an egg toss contest will be held outside. This contest is always fun for those involved as well as those watching. A decorated egg contest will be held in the Potlatch building as well. Godwin said the children will decorate eggs made from construction paper. The winner will be given candy as a prize. All children who come to the hunt will be given balloons. Speaking of balloons, the Balloon Man will be on hand to tie balloons into the shape of different animals. This attraction was a big hit at last year's hunt. The Balloon Man is sponsored by the Artesian Arts League. One final item. Godwin said all children must bring their own basket and be accompanied by an adult at all times. Adults may not drop off children, then leave. Those attending are asked to park outside the fairgrounds, as the area around the Potlatch building where the Live Nativity was held at Christmas will be roped off. This is being done as a safety precaution to protect the children. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
