Mayor raises tax question

Gurdon Mayor Clayton Franklin addressed the Arkadelphia City Board recently about the one-cent sales tax reallocation.

In recent months, several mayors in Clark County have met to discuss how a portion of the tax could be returned to the cities in the county.

Franklin presented the proposal to the board. He had recently stated at the last Gurdon City Council meeting he felt without the support of Arkadelphia the proposal was out of the question.

Franklin told the board he felt the same way now. Franklin said if the Arkadelphia City Board didn't consider the tax, then there was no hope.

An attorney had advised Franklin the idea could be voted on without harming the sales tax. This was originally one of the mayor's number one concerns. Without any of the tax money the cities would not have the money they need to operate properly.

A former mayor, who is now a director said the idea, had been brought up before when he was in office, however, the mayors at the time were not for it.

Lots of discussion took place during the meeting with several board members expressing their concern about how the proposal would be written up in order to keep everyone out of trouble.

No major decisions were made at that time.
