Wolves finish second in regional part IIIPublished Wednesday, February 27, 2002 in the Nevada County PicayuneRay and Kevin Moseby scored 15 each for Hamburg. Kenneth Brown added 11. John Powell paced McGehee with 10. In the girls' semifinal game, Fordyce pounded Warren 59-33. The Lady Jacks jumped on Fordyce early, leading 8-3 with 4:24 left in the first. The Lady Bugs battled back, but trailed 12-8 at the end of one. From there it was all Fordyce, as the Lady Bugs tied the game within the first minute of the second quarter, while Warren was cold from the field. With 5:20 showing, Fordyce started taking control of the game and led 16-12, as the Lady Jacks simply could not buy a basket. Mistakes by Fordyce allowed Warren to stay in the game, but the Lady Bugs held a 20-16 advantage when the buzzer sounded ending the first half of play. Warren opened the third quarter by throwing the ball away. It went downhill from there for the Lady Jacks, as Fordyce began pulling away. With 4:54 showing, the Lady Bugs held a 10-point lead at 28-18, and were up 36-22 when the quarter ended. Fordyce outscored Warren 23-11 in the final frame. The Lady Bugs hit 14 of 23 free throws, while Warren was seven of 16 from the line. Morgan led Fordyce with 14. Kristy Domineck paced Warren with 12. In the first senior boy's semifinal game, the Wolves had to fend off De Queen 49-43 to earn a shot at Hamburg. "Little Bud" was packed for this game, the second meeting of the teams this year. The teams slugged away at each other in the first and second quarters, with neither able to gain an advantage. The score was tied 12-12 at the end of one and at 19-19 at the half. It was like a heavyweight boxing match where the combatants stand toe to toe trading punches. The second half, though, was different, as the Wolves managed to connect with a solid right and start to put some distance between them and De Queen. With 6:52 showing, Fulks nailed a shot to give Prescott a 21-19 lead. This was followed by a series of mistakes by the Leopards, which worked to Prescott's advantage. The score went to 26-21, then 28-21, ending with Prescott leading 34-26 when the buzzer sounded. The Leopards were stunned and reeling, but not out on their feet yet. De Queen scored first in the fourth, but never managed to cut into Prescott's lead. For every action by the Leopards, the Wolves had an equal and opposite reaction to preserve the win. Prescott was 15 of 22 from the charity stripe, while De Queen netted eight of 12. Fulks and Stueart scored 14 each, with Tidwell adding 12 for good measure. Hammond and Hall led De Queen with 13 each. In the first semifinal game for the girls, Star City clipped Lake Village 48-47. This game was close from the opening tip to the final buzzer, as neither could pull away from the other. The Lady Dogs controlled the opening tip and tried to slow the game down from the get-go. Star City managed a 14-10 lead with 1:56 showing, though the period ended with the Lady Dogs leading 17-15 as the Lady Jacks fought back. Nothing changed in the second, as the teams continued their chess match, each working for an opening against the other and not finding it. For the most part, the squads swapped baskets, with the halftime score 29-26 in Lake Village's favor. The Lady Dogs managed to hold onto the lead through the third period, though the pace of the game remained unchanged. The fourth quarter started with Lake Village up 37-36.
