Published Wednesday, February 27, 2002 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Lady Dogs were eight of 20 in free throws, while Fordyce hit 10 of 15.

Chimere Maddox paced Star City with 14 points. Karina McDonald added 12.

Brittany Morgan and Mardricka Vance scored eight each for Fordyce.

Consolation games to determine third and fourth seed were played early Saturday afternoon.

Action opened with senior girls action pitting two teams from the 8AAA against one another as no teams from the 7AAA made it past Friday night.

Lake Village's Lady Beavers edged the Warren Lady Lumberjacks 60-59.

Early on it appeared as though the Lady Jacks would run away with the game as they led 21-13 at the end of one, and held a 29-22 advantage at halftime.

Lake Village won the second half, starting in the third quarter when the Lady Beavers took a 45-44 lead.

Both teams scored 15 points in the fourth period, giving the Lady Beavers the win.

De Queen managed to clip the McGehee Owls 51-50 in the boys consolation game.

This contest saw plenty of action with the two teams racing up and down the court trying to tire the other, or at least expose a weakness.

The Leopards managed to build a 7-2 lead with 5:17 showing, as De Queen managed to get better shots.

The quarter ended with De Queen up 19-12.

McGehee fought back in the second period, pressing the Leopards, but the Owls had problems finding the bottom of the bucket early on.

Later, the game got sloppy as both crews made mental mistakes allowing the other team to steal the ball. Neither, though, scored much.

Halftime arrived with De Queen leading 26-21.

The Owls opened the third quarter with the ball and taking six shots at the basket before scoring.

Things slowed down from there, where the score was concerned, as the squads battled defensively for about three minutes, until the Leopards managed to take advantage of a break.

The third quarter ended with De Queen leading 40-33.

McGehee fought back in the final eight minutes, pushing the Leopards to the limit, but never managed to wrest the lead from De Queen.

The Leopards were six of 10 at the line, while McGehee hit seven of 10.

Matt Hall led the Leopards with 25, while James Hammond added 14.

Octavious Rhodes paced the Owls with 21.

On Friday, Feb. 22, Hamburg and McGehee's boys met in semifinal action, with the Lions posting a 67-45 win.

Hamburg scored first and never looked back, though the Owls did managed to stay close in the first half.

The Lions led 17-12 at the end of one, using their run and gun style.

The second quarter was much like the first as both teams looked to run and shoot at every opportunity.

The Owls managed to cut the lead to two, 17-15, at the start of the second, before both teams went cold from the floor.

With 4:15 left in the half, Hamburg led 22-17. This changed shortly thereafter, with the teams finding their range.

At the half, Hamburg led 30-24.

McGehee stayed withing eight points in the third quarter, with the Owls working inside.

At one point, the Owls had cut the lead to 35-34, but were unable to take the lead.

This gave the Lions all the incentive they needed, as Hamburg scored the final seven points of the third period to lead 42-24 heading into the fourth.

It was pretty much all Hamburg in the last eight minutes as the Lions outscored McGehee 25-11.

Hamburg relied on the press and quick hands to force turnovers and easy baskets.

The Lions hit 14 of 22 free throws, while the Owls netted three of five.
