Virgil Elton SmithpetersMPublished Wednesday, April 21, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesVirgil Elton Smithpeters, 79, of Gurdon died Sunday, April 18, 1999. Mr. Smithpeters was born at Okolona on January 21, 1920. He was the son of the late William Brummitt and Loutissue Smithpeters. He was a member of the First Baptist church in Gurdon. A long time businessman, Mr. Smithpeters operated Smithpeters Mobil Service Station in Gurdon from 1953 to 1972. Mr. Smithpeters also was a mortician and funeral director with Horne Funeral Home for 19 years. He served 27 years with the Gurdon Volunteer Fire Department and retired as fire chief in 1980. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Elise; two sons, Gerald Smithpeters of Ashdown and Don Smithpeters of Gurdon; daughter, Lisa Hughes of Gurdon; five sisters, Ester James of Paoli, Okla., Lola Stewart of Gurdon, Lois Davis of Longview, Texas, Opal Anderson of Arkadelphia and Freda Barfield of Bald Knob; two brothers, Bill Smithpeters and J.C. Smithpeters of Okolona; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday, April 20, at Horne Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Mark May officiating.
