Library modernizingBY AUTUMN PENNINGTONPublished Wednesday, February 27, 2002 in the Gurdon Times Thanks to the C. Louis and Mary Cabe Foundation the Cabe Public Library will soon be automated. The foundation granted the library $5,000 towards the automation process. With automation taking over the library, it will be easier for patrons to register in order to check books out. It will also make it easier to change registration information, such as, address and name changes. Overdue library books will no longer have to be looked up by cards, they will also be automated and notices will be printed up automatically. Another helpful change will be with the card catalog. Now if someone is looking for a book on a particular subject, it can be found on the computer and is faster. This method brings up titles through subjects and gives information of the book. In order to start this process the Cabe Public Library is asking everyone to return any books they may have that are overdue. There will be no charge for returning these books and the library will need them in order to take an accurate inventory. With the new system, anyone not returning books will be blocked out and not allowed to check out books. The library knows this is a long process, but plans, if everything flows smoothly it will be finished by the end of the year. The library also expects to be open during the process, unless it closes for two weeks to bar code all the books. The public will be notified if a temporary shut-down of the library is necessary.
