Nominations sought for citizen of the yearBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 20, 2002 in the Nevada County Picayune Nominations are being sought for the Nevada County Citizen of the Year. Mary Godwin, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, said, the annual Chamber banquet has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, at the McRae Middle School cafetorium. The theme for this year's banquet will be "A Night at the Movies." Dress for the affair is casual. There will be a buffet-style dinner featuring barbecue with all the trimmings. However, she said, bids have not been sent out yet to determine who will cater the event. Miss Arkansas, Jessie Ward, will be the featured entertainer for the event, which begins, as has been the case in recent years, with the auction. Godwin said the auction has been reduced this year to keep the banquet under three hours. Meantime, the deadline for making nominations for Citizen of the Year, one of the highlights, is March 8, 2002. Any county resident can make a nomination, and the nominee must also live in Nevada County, or has a business located in the county. Nominations and the reasons for nomination must be submitted in writing, no phone calls will be accepted. A selection committee will judge the nominations based on the following criteria: outstanding service to family, city, county, state, national affairs, church activity, fraternal, recreational and industrial and education oriented services. The committee will be basing its decision on the content of the letters received, not the number of letters or signatures. Past winners include: Ron Wright, William Mullins, William Taylor, Billy Hines, Howard Taylor, Julie Stockton, Lenora Dalrymple and John Brannon. Nominations should be mailed to: Citizen of the Year, c/o Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 307 (or 116 East Second Street), Prescott, Ark. 71857. Teachers of the year will also be named for the three districts in the county at the banquet, as will the Treasure of Gold Award. A business seminar on hiring smart will be held Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Christus St. Michael Community Room. The meeting will be held from 12-1 p.m., with Christy Colvin speaking. This is a free seminar. There will be a community coffee held Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 8:30-10 a.m. at the Prescott High School home economics building. This is for the National Vocational Week. A coffee will be held for Pearl Taylor Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 9:30-11 a.m. Taylor is retiring from the Bank of Prescott after 37 years of service. The coffee will be held at the bank.
