January weather was hot and cold; then wet and dryBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 6, 2002 in the Nevada County Picayune Weatherwise, January was a strange month. It began typically cold, but ended with the temperatures warming up to early-summer levels near 80 degrees. According to local weatherman Phillip McAdams, the lowest the mercury fell during January was 15 on the third and fourth. However, by Jan. 30, this had changed drastically, with the temperature hitting a warm 79 degrees. The average daily temperatures for the month, McAdams said were 32 as the low and 55 as the daily high. Davis Benton, the meteorologist from Cale, concurred with McAdams on the temperature variance. Benton said the coldest it got was 15 degrees on Jan. 3, with the warmest being 80 degrees on Jan. 30. It was also a relatively dry month both agreed. Benton said 3.46 inches of rain fell in January, with it raining nine days in the month. McAdams said the Prescott area received 3.15 inches of rain, with the largest single amount being 1.39 inches on Jan. 23-24. The month ended, McAdams said, with 0.41 inch of rain falling on Jan. 31.
