Diamond Devils Doing Well This SeasonBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, April 21, 1999 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's Diamond Devils have been playing solid baseball throughout the season. The Devils opened the season against a perennial power in Bismarck, losing a heartbreaker 18-15. In the contest, the Devils sent three over the fence, with Colby Pace going yard twice. The Devils got on the winning track in their next outing on Feb. 25, as they whipped Prescott 17-14 in a slugfest. March opened with Gurdon trouncing cross-county rival Arkadelphia 13-7 before falling 7-6 to a tough Norphlet Team in the JC tourney. From there, it was time for the Curley Wolf Classic in Prescott, where Gurdon won three straight to take home the trophy. The Wolves were Gurdon's first victim, as the Devils romped to an 11-5 win. The bats were still hot in game two of the classic as Gurdon pounded the Nevada Blue Jays 14-3 and brought home the gold with a hard fought 8-7 win over the ever-tough Blevins Hornets. Gurdon dropped its next three, two being on the road and the first being a 9-1 decision to Malvern. Lakeside handed the Devils their first blank game of the season with a 5-0 win, while Junction City unleashed the lumber in a 14-3 victory. On April 13, the Devils offense returned to form as Gurdon jumped all over Stephens in a 14-1 win at Cabe Field. For the season, Pace and J. Rhodes each have gone yard twice, while Joe Plyler and B. Jennings have homered once each. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
