With all the hoopla surrounding the opening of the new Prescott Sports Arena, one thing was overlooked.

It seems the snarling wolf's head logo at center court was designed by students in the Prescott High School EAST Lab program.

Drew Nelson, a senior at PHS, along with Lindsay Poole and Josie Neiemeyer, worked to come up with the logo design.

The trio began the process by looking at a number of different wolf heads. They came up with an idea, which was rejected by Ron Wright, Prescott superintendent, and the coaching staff.

It was back to the drawing boards for the three. Nelson talked to the coaches, came up with a design, got it on paper and showed it to all involved. The second design is the one which was painted on the court.

This design, Nelson said, was taken from an old PHS football helmet. The group found a sticker with the symbol, transferred it to paper, then went through the computer process of getting it ready.

Nelson said they used the Soft and Large program, along with Microsoft paint in getting the design ready.

Overall, he said, it took about a month to complete the project.

"I couldn't believe it when they gave us that project," Nelson said.

Students in the EAST Lab class were broken into groups with each group being given a different project. Some dealt with school activities, while others involved the community as a whole.

"I won't be there after this year," Nelson said, "but the drawing will be there for years to come. I thought it was pretty nice to get to do something like that and it be used."

Nelson said EAST Lab is the best program PHS has to offer, as it teaches students how to work through all phases of a project from inception to completion. "We had a blast doing it."

According to Wright, this EAST Lab crew played a significant part in Prescott getting the bid for the regional basketball tournament.

He said they put a digital graphics design showing what Prescott had to offer visitors, along with pictures of the new sports facility.

Wright said when he looked at the designs for the floor logo, he didn't realize it was done by the EAST Lab students. "They do a great job."
