Senior center dedicatedBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 19, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune Thursday, Dec. 13, was a day of celebration in Prescott, as the new Senior Adult Center was officially dedicated with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Local and area dignitaries gathered at the center, all congratulating the community on the center's opening. The center has 5,500 square feet of space, and was built, in part, through a Community Development Block Grant for $325,000. The Area Agency on Aging also helped with the funding, with the center employees holding local fundraisers to make the project a success. "We'd like to thank the mayor for all the work that went into the project," said Center Director Irma Sue Purtle, "as well as all of the other individuals who donated time and money. "We're currently in the process of raising funds to pave the parking lot and provide landscaping for the area. The objective of our senior citizen center," she continued, "is to help our seniors remain active in their own home and community. As long as seniors keep going, the need for nursing home care can be delayed perhaps forever thereby saving tax dollars." To help with the parking lot fundraiser, local songbird Brandi Karlovec is donating $3 from the sale of her new CD, "How Long til Love Finds Me", to the center. Karlovec is trying to raise $250 as her part. To go with this, State Sen. Percy Malone offered to match the amount raised by the sale of Karlovec's CD. "Prescott is a community full of residents who care about each other," Karlovec said. " My goal is to raise $250 for the center." Malone, who was on hand for the ribbon cutting, said he was happy to support this project and applauded Karlovec's effort in trying to raise money for the parking lot. The fundraiser for the senior center will continue until Valentine's Day, Karlovec said. The CDs can be purchased at the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, or by calling Karlovec at 887-1364. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
