Wolverettes doing well early onBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 5, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's Wolverettes are off to a good start this basketball season, as they have a 2-3 record. The Wolverettes opened the year with a 64-49 loss to the Lady Lions of Horatio. The game opened with both squads scoring 21 points. However, scoring slowed down in the second period, with Horatio outscoring Prescott 15-12 to take a 36-33 lead at the half. The Wolverettes played with the Lady Lions throughout the third quarter, which ended with Horatio leading 49-41. In the final eight minutes, it was all Horatio, as the Lady Lions outscored Prescott 15-8. The Wolverettes hit 12 of 26 from the line, while Horatio connected on 19 of 28 free throws. Sophia Dunn and Tammy Harris led Prescott with 19 each. Ashley Ward paced Horatio with 17, while Jennifer Suggs stroked the cords for 16 and Sonya Johnson netted 13. PRESCOTT 67 GURDON 47 The Wolverettes hammered their old foe Gurdon 67-47 in the second game of the year. Prescott jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the first quarter and pushed it to a 37-23 advantage by halftime. The Wolverettes kept the pace up in the third quarter as they held a 51-40 lead at the end of three, and outscored Gurdon's Lady Devils 16-7 in the final eight minutes. Prescott nailed eight of 25 free throws, while Gurdon hit 21 of 33 from the line. Dunn paved the way for the win with 25 points. She was followed by LaSheena Gillard's 18 and Madeline Taylor's 12. Sonya Beasley led the Lady Devils with 13, while Tonya Russey scored 11. PRESCOTT 49 NEVADA 58 Nevada's Lady Blue Jays tripped up the Wolverettes 58-49 in game three. The Lady Jays were taking no prisoners early as they jumped out to a 16-8 lead at the end of one, pushing it to a 25-18 advantage by halftime. Prescott fought back in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 38-36, but the Wolverettes were unable to maintain the pace as the Lady Jays outscored them 20-13 in the final period. Harris led the Wolverettes with 13 points. LaToya Beasley paced Nevada with 24, while Tyrunza Heard netted 18. Prescott was seven of 14 from the charity stripe, while Nevada connected on 29 of 46 free throws. PRESCOTT 39 HORATIO 34 The Wolverettes managed to even the score with the Lady Lions as they posted a 39-34 road win Tuesday, Nov. 27. Horatio opened with an 11-8 lead at the end of one, and took a 21-18 margin into the lockers at the break. However, the Wolverettes won the second half, going up 27-26 by the end of three, and outscoring Horatio 12-8 in the fourth quarter. Harris led Prescott's charge with 24 points. Suggs, Ward and Harris all had nine for Horatio. Prescott was three of seven from the line, while Horatio hit six of eight free throws.
