Council updated on landfill; loan for buildingBY AUTUMN PENNINGTONPublished Wednesday, December 5, 2001 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's City Council had it's regularly scheduled meeting on November 19. Mayor Clayton Franklin updated the council on the topic of the proposed landfill that would be located just outside of Gurdon City limits. Franklin said International Paper Company turned the District down on a proposed option, however, International Paper had decided to sell the land out right. The proposed land price is $282,600. If the land is purchased for the purpose of a landfill it will take three to five years to get a permit for such a facility. Franklin also updated the council on the loan to buy the building and land from Randy Weems the city is already renting for the street department. The loan will be approved by the United States Department of Agriculture. The loan will be for $60,000 at a 4.7 percent interest rate for 10 years. This will raise the monthly payment by $26. However, when the 10 years is up the city will own the property. Franklin said he checked with local financial institutions, but their rates were not even close to that of the USDA. The council voted to enter into the 10-year loan agreement as soon as everything is in the clear. Betty Torgerson, a Gurdon Citizen, was on hand at the council meeting and asked Franklin why the firemen could have a pension plan, but none of the other city employees could. Torgerson said, "Our city employees work hard and deserve to have a pension plan if it is possible." Franklin said he agreed with Torgerson and thanked her for being concerned with the matter. Franklin told Torgerson he would look into the matter and find out what it would take to start such a program. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
