Devils fall short to Rattlers

Gurdon's Go-Devils faced the Murfreesboro Rattlers Friday night at Go-Devil Stadium.

It was the last home game for the Devils this year and also, Senior Night.

The Devils played hard, but fell short to the Rattlers by a score of 16-13.

The contest started with Murfreesboro winning the toss and electing to received the football.

The Rattlers started offense at the Devil 44, but could only gain nine yards in four plays and were forced to turn the ball over on downs to Gurdon.

The Devils began offense on their own 36.

Thirteen plays and 64 yards later, K.P. Meeks crossed the goal line for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good, and with 3:41 left in the first quarter the score was Gurdon 7, Murfreesboro 0.

Gurdon kicked off again to the Rattlers who couldn't hold onto the ball, with Gurdon recovering the fumble.

The Devils took the ball at the Rattler 25. But four plays later, Murfreesboro intercepted a Devil pass and started offense at Gurdon's 33.

The Rattlers only got off three plays before the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter started with Murfreesboro turning the ball over on downs to Gurdon after three unproductive plays.

Gurdon started offense on its own 24 yard line, but eight plays later would fumble the ball on the 22 of the Rattlers.

Eight plays would get the Rattlers to the 21 yard line of Gurdon, but they turned the ball over on downs from the same spot.

Gurdon would get off five offensive plays all the way to the 42, But would there try a pass, which was intercepted by the Rattlers.

The Rattlers would only get off seven plays before halftime arrived with the score 7-0 Gurdon.

The second half started with Gurdon receiving the ball and beginning offense on their own 33 yard line.

Four plays and three yards later, James Moseley of Gurdon was forced to punt to the Rattlers.

A touchdown-saving tackle by Eddie Fort on the Rattlers punt return would start their offense on the Gurdon 10.

It only took two plays for Murfreesboro to score a touchdown, and with 9:08 left in the third quarter and a good two point conversion, the score was Gurdon 7, Murfreesboro 8.

Gurdon would field the kick off and start offense on their own 33. Seven plays later at the Gurdon 47, Moseley was again forced to punt to the Rattlers.

The Rattlers started offense on their own 45. They would use seven plays to drive the length of the field and score a touchdown. The two point attempt was good, and with 1:37 left in the third quarter, the score was Gurdon 7, Murfreesboro 16.

After the Rattler kickoff, Gurdon started offense on their own 33.

The fourth quarter began with Gurdon using two plays to drive from the Rattler 45 for a touchdown. The two point conversion attempt was no good, and with 11:41 left in the game, the score was Gurdon 13, Murfreesboro 16.

The Rattlers received the kickoff and started offense on their own 46 yard line. Seven plays later at the Gurdon 45, they were forced to punt to Gurdon.

Gurdon could only gain seven yards in four plays and was forced to punt to Murfreesboro.

The Rattlers started offense at their own 49, but could only make it to the Gurdon 47 and had to punt to Gurdon.

The Devils would use 11 plays to drive to the Rattler 30.

However, time would then run out in the game with a final score of Gurdon 13, Murfreesboro 16.

Individual statistics for Gurdon are as follows: Gurdon ran a total of 61 plays for 299 yards, two touchdowns, one extra point, two interceptions and one fumble.

Gurdon ran six pass plays for negative one yard and 55 rushing plays for 300 yards.

Leading the offense was Meeks with 127 yards in 17 attempts, Cevin Laster with 55 yards in nine attempts, Marcell Johnson with 79 yards in 16 attempts.

Jake Plyler had 23 yards in two attempts. Fort with 21 yards in three attempts, and Davion Williams with negative six yards in one attempt.

Leading the Go-Devil defense was Fort with six tackles, and Walter Hart with five tackles. Meeks and Chris Williams had four tackles. Williams, Laster, and Johnson had three tackles. Tirrell Hatley, Jake Plyler, and Josh Uchtman had two tackles. J.J. Plyler had one tackle.

Murfreesboro ran a total of 46 plays for a total of 173 yards. The Rattlers ran nine pass plays for 16 yards, 37 running plays for 157 yards, two touchdowns, two 2-point conversions, four fumbles, and no interceptions.

Gurdon will travel to Horatio Friday night for the last conference game of the regular season. Kick off will be a 7:30 p.m.

For the Devils to have a shot at post-season action, they team must beat the Lions by a minimum of five points.
