Wolves handle Cobras part 2By John MillerPublished Wednesday, October 17, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune Wallace gained seven on a quarterback keeper, and was helped by an offside call against Prescott on second down. Jones carried twice to the 49 before Wallace tossed the ball to Eric Benefield on an option for two, still short of a first down. The Cobras lined up in punt formation, only to have a pack of Wolves in the backfield with Toby Bullock blocking the kick, picking the ball up and scampering in for a touchdown. The point after made it 23-7 with 2:09 left in the half. The ensuing kick went out of bounds, with the Cobras taking the ball on the 35. Three plays later Fountain Lake was again in punt formation, with the kick being partially blocked and going out of bounds at the Cobra 42. The Wolves had the opportunity to take Fountain Lake out of the game, but were unable to take advantage of the chance they were given. Martin missed a wide open Eli Ratcliff with a first down pass, overthrowing the receiver. Had the pass been on target, Ratcliff could have waltzed into the end zone untouched. Martin was sacked at the 47 on second down, and missed Ratcliff with a third down pass, forcing the Wolves to punt. Before the punt occurred, though, Prescott was hit with a delay of game penalty and moved back to the Wolf 48. He booted the ball to the 18, but a flag had been tossed against Fountain Lake for roughing the kicker. This moved the all to the Cobra 36, where Martin was unable to connect with Jarrod Norwood as the buzzer sounded ending the first half of play. The Wolves have had problems in the third quarter all season long, as the team apparently comes out flat after the halftime break. This third quarter was no different. Williams fielded the short kick at the 30, getting to the 42 before being brought down. Vanhook carried twice, but fumbled on the second play, with the Cobras recovering the ball at the Fountain Lake 48. Jones lost two on first down, gained three on second down with Wallace getting sacked on down three. The punt rolled dead at the Prescott 35. Three plays later, the Wolves found themselves having lost eight yards as Vanhook was caught in the backfield on first down and Martin was sacked on the next play. Martin's third down pass to Jason Butler was incomplete. Ward lined up to punt, fought with a bad snap and managed to get off a 12-yard kick to the Wolves's 39. Fountain Lake needed six plays to put their second touchdown on the board. The drive ended with Jones going in from the one. The Cobra's two-point conversion attempt was no good, leaving the score 23-13 with 3:41 showing. Fountain Lake had to kick the ball twice as the first attempt went out of bounds. The second was booted from the 35 and taken by Vanhook at the 33. He returned the ball to the 46. After gaining one on first down, Vanhook was replaced by Demaricus Craven. Craven gained two on his first attempt, but fumbled on third down. Prescott recovered the ball at the Wolf 40. Following an illegal procedure call, Ward punted to Wallace at the Cobra 26, where he was felled. Benefield carried three times, reaching the 35 as the quarter came to an end. Fountain Lake opened the final 12 minutes with Wallace scoring on a fourth and one attempt. However, the officials blew the play dead early, thus wiping out the touchdown. To partially make up for their mistake, they put the ball on the 45 and gave the Cobras a first down. Two plays later, Fountain Lake fumbled the ball, with Prescott recovering.
