Wolves take it on chin, 31-0, against De QueenBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 10, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune It is no secret the team controlling the football wins most of the time. This is exactly what happened Friday night when the Prescott Curley Wolves traveled to De Queen. The team controlling the ball won the game. Unfortunately, it wasn't Prescott and the Wolves fell 31-0. The loss drops Prescott's season record to 2-4 and 1-2 in 7AAA conference play. For the Wolves to make the playoffs, they will have to win their remaining four games against Fountain Lake, Mena, Fouke and Ashdown no easy task. It also wouldn't hurt for Nashville to get beat again, as the Scrappers fell 47-34 to Ashdown Friday night. Prescott won the toss and took the kick to get the game underway. Charles Gulley fielded the opening kick off at the Prescott 13, returning it to the 23 for the Wolves. R.J. Vanhook gained seven yards on three carries, falling short of a first down and forcing Prescott to punt. Casey Ward's kick went 22 yards to the Leopard 48. It was three plays and out for De Queen, as the Wolf defense stopped the Leopards after gaining three yards. Vanhook caught the punt at the Prescott 10, but slipped down at the six on the wet turf. Prescott's offense was unable to move the ball out of the shadow of its own goal and had to punt again after three snaps. Ward's kick died at the Prescott 38 with 6:29 left in the first quarter. Travis Williamson carried three straight times to the 31, still three yards shy of a first down. Leopard coach Jeff Jones gambled, calling for a quarterback draw out of the shotgun formation. The ruse worked, as Brian McLelland found a seam and scored with 5:03 left in the period. The point after was wide left, but De Queen led 6-0. Haris Williams bobbled the kick at the 25, but fell on the ball to keep it in Prescott's possession. Again, though, the Wolves were unable to move the ball and had to punt after three plays. Before the punt occurred, though, Prescott was flagged for an equipment problem and moved five yards back to the 24. Ward's kick was fielded at the Leopard 33 and returned to the Prescott 40. De Queen moved the ball to the Wolf two before the defense stiffened and forced a field goal attempt. The kick was wide left, a pattern for the Leopards on kicks most of the game, giving Prescott the ball at the Wolf 20 with 1:28 to go in the opening period. Vanhook gained 11 yards on three carries, putting the ball at the 31. On the final play of the quarter, Craig Teague gained five to the 36. The second quarter opened with Prescott losing six yards on two plays and being forced to punt once again. Ward's kick rolled dead at the Leopard 33. A trap to Jones gained 12 to the 45, with Jones adding three more on his second carry. The Leopards were flagged for illegal procedure and moved back to the 43, where McLelland found a receiver at midfield. He kept the ball out of the shotgun again, getting to the Prescott 39 on the next play. However, the Leopards were flagged again for procedure and moved to the 43, where McLelland missed connection with his target. He tried to run the ball on second down, but lost three yards to the 46, before finding a receiver at the Wolf 23 to keep the drive alive. De Queen marched methodically downfield, but turned the ball over on downs at the 17 with 5:45 left in the half. The Wolves appeared to be getting a drive going, as Vanhook and Craven were able to move the ball to the 30, before a fumbled snap was pounced on by the Leopards and returned to the Prescott 15.
