Devils take sting out of Stamps in 48-0 thrashingBY MARC CRAWLEYPublished Wednesday, October 10, 2001 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's Go-Devils faced the Stamps Yellow Jackets Friday night at Stamps, and though the rain fell and the wind blew, the Devils came out on top 48-0. The contest started with Eddie Fort of Gurdon kicking off to Stamps. The Yellow Jackets started offense at their own 36 yard line and four plays later they would find themselves backed up three yards and forced to punt to Gurdon. Uthel Gatlin received the ball and returned it to the Gurdon 38. Gurdon started offense there and only used four plays to drive 62 yards ending with K.P. Meeks scoring. After a good two-point conversion on a quarterback keeper by Jake Plyler, the score was 8-0. With 9:50 left in the first quarter, Fort kicked off to the Stamps 10 yard line. Stamps would return the ball to the 31. The Jackets gained eight yards in three plays and were forced to punt to Gurdon. Gurdon started offense on its own 48. Gurdon only gained three yards in four plays and was forced to punt. Stamps would begin offense at its own 21, and four plays punted from the 26. Gurdon started its offense at the Stamps 39 yard line. Seven plays later, Cevin Laster crossed the goal line and after missed two point conversion the score was 14-0. Fort once again kicked off for Gurdon to the Stamps 33. From there, the Jackets started their offensive series, only to end it seven plays and 15 yards later with a punt to Tirrell Hatley of Gurdon. The Devils started offense at their 14. Six plays and 18 yards later, Gurdon was forced to punt to Stamps. Started offense at its 45; and six plays later punted back to Gurdon. Gurdon started offense at its five; and four plays later only made it to the 14 yard line. From there, James Mosley punted to the Gurdon 37. Stamps started their offense from there and eight plays later turned the ball over on downs to Gurdon at the Devil 18. Gurdon ran four plays before the first half ended with the score 14-0. The second half started with Meeks receiving the Stamps kickoff at the Gurdon 36. Four plays later, Gurdon fumbled the ball at the 37 with Stamps falling on the loose ball. The Jackets gained three yards in four plays and punted away again. The Devils started offense at Stamps 42, and seven plays later used a fake punt to avoid losing the ball at the Stamps 31. Five plays later, Meeks crossed the goal line for six points and after a blocked extra point attempt, the score was 20-0. Fort kicked off to Ryan Cole, who was stopped by Chris Williams at the Stamps 40. The Jackets gained only nine yards in three plays and booted the ball back to Gurdon. The Devils started offense at the Stamps 48, and needed two plays for Fort to score from the 39 for another touchdown. After two point conversion by Kelvin McPeak, the score was 28-0. With 1:19 left in the third quarter, Fort kicked off to the Stamp's 22. Five plays later, Hatley intercepted a Stamps pass and returned it to the Jacket 45. This would end the third quarter. To start the fourth quarter, Laster returned the ball from the 45 yard line all the way to the end zone. After a failed extra point attempt, the score was 34-0. Fort kicked off again to Stamps at the 37. From there, Stamps only gained three yards in three plays and was forced to punt again to Gurdon. Gurdon started offense from its 40, but three plays later had to punt to Stamps. The Yellow Jackets only gained eight yards in their series and punted negative eight yards to the Go Devil offense at the Stamps 22. Marcell Johnson broke free and scored. The point after was good and Gurdon held a 42-0 lead. Fort kicked off again to the Stamps 48. Stamps would only get off one play before Laster intercepted a pass by Stamps at the Gurdon 45. Gurdon required but two plays to end with a score by Meeks. The point after failed, but Gurdon led 48-0. Fort would kick off again, this time to the Stamps 14. The Jackets lost four yards in three plays and were forced to punt to Gurdon. Gurdon started and ended offense at the Stamps 47with a fumble recovered by the Jackets. Stamps gained no yards in four downs; and with 30 seconds left in the game turned the ball over on downs. Gurdon only ran one play when the time expired in the game with the final score of 48-0. Individual statistics for Gurdon are as follows: Gurdon ran a total of 58 offensive plays for 373 yards. The Go Devils had 53 run plays for 373 yards, five pass plays for no yards, seven touchdowns, three two-point conversions, two fumbles, and one interception. Leading the Gurdon offense was Laster with 154 yards in 28 attempts, Meeks with 96 yards in 10 attempts, Fort with 52 yards in two attempts, Johnson with 27 yards in two attempts, Jake Plyler with six yards in three attempts, and Walter Hart with five yards in three attempts. Leading the Go Devil defense was Johnson with nine tackles, Fort with eight tackles, Hart and Chris Williams with five tackles, Josh Uchtman and McPeak with four tackles, Derrick Puckett with three takles, Davion Williams and J.J. Plyler with two tackles, and Mosley, Meeks, and Hatley all having one tackle. Stamps ran a total of 62 offensive plays for 77 yards. The Yellow Jackets ran 15 pass plays for 10 yards, 47 run plays for 67 yards, and had no touchdowns and two interceptions. The Gurdon Go Devil face Lewisville this Friday night at Go Devil Stadium.
