Wolves put up good fight part 2BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 3, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune Teague fought through the Scrapper front line, falling into the end zone for the score, fumbling the ball after hitting the ground, but jumping on it to make sure the touchdown counted. The PAT tied the game at 14-14, with 2:51 showing, and scoring for the period wasn't over yet. Hopson took the kick to the 30, but Nashville was hit with a clipping penalty, and saw a good runback nullified. The Scrappers began at their own six. Hopson moved the ball to the 21 on two runs, before his team was flagged for holding and moved back to the seven. Pope couldn't connect with a receiver on third down and the Scrappers had to punt. Prescott put on a heavy rush, with Jason Butler blocking the kick for a safety to give the Wolves a 16-14 lead with 50 seconds to go. Following the safety, Nashville had to kick from its 20. Vanhook took the kick at the Prescott 36, returning it to the 47. At this point the Wolves had the Scrappers on the ropes, and needed only a good right cross to take them out of the game. This, though, didn't happen. As the first quarter, which lasted 50 minutes, came to an end, Prescott was hit with back-to-back penalties, moving the ball back to the Wolf 37. Craven gained three at the buzzer, with the Wolves starting at their 40 to get the second quarter underway. Two plays later, however, the Wolves were in punt formation for the first time of the night. Casey Ward was unable to come down with a high snap, but Prescott did manage to recover the fumble. It didn't matter, as Nashville took over on downs at the Wolf 17. Three plays later, the Scrappers again had the lead as Nick Anderson went over from the one. The PAT made it 21-16 with 9:53 left. Prescott's offense was unable to sustain a drive for the remainder of the half. The same couldn't be said for Nashville, as the Scrappers scored four more times in the period. Gulley fielded the kick at the 21, returning it to the 34. Three plays later, Ward punted to Roger Witherspoon at the Nashville 31. The return was to the 37, but the Scrappers were hit with another clipping call, moving them back to the 22. Pope hit Donnie Langston with a first down pass to the Prescott 31. Anderson bulled his way to the 14 before coughing up the ball. Prescott recovered the fumble, but the officials said he was down, letting Nashville keep the ball. Hopson carried three times to score with 5:00 left in the half. The point after made it 28-16. Vanhook took the kick at the 16, returning it to the 35, only to see the run nullified because of a clipping call against Prescott. The Wolves started at their 19. Teague gained a yard before Martin fumbled with Nashville recovering at the one. Hopson needed one carry to make the score 34-16 with 3:47 remaining. The PAT made the score 35-16. Craven took the kick at the 19, but lost the ball. The fumble was recovered by Gulley at the eight. Three plays and a penalty later, the Wolves were in punt formation. The snap was mishandled, but fallen on by a Wolf in the end zone for a safety to make the score 37-16 with 2:02. Soils took the kick at the Nashville 34, returning it to the Prescott 41. A screen to Devon Vaughn lost two, before Prescott was hit with an unnecessary roughness call. The hit was clean, and no rougher than any other lick passed during the night, but the officials saw it differently and moved Nashville 15 yards closer to Prescott's goal line at the 29. Prescott's defense made Nashville work for the score, as it took eight plays for the Scrappers to cover 29 yards. With 18 seconds left in the half, Nashville led 43-16 as the PAT was blocked.
