Bluegrass Festival May 8,9

Published Wednesday, April 21, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

The second annual Hope-Hempstead County Chamber of Commerce Bluegrass Festival is set for May 8 and 9 in Hope's Fair Park.

The festival is open to the public and admission is free. It is believed this is the only 'free' Bluegrass Festival in the state.

Seven bands will take part in this year's festival. 'Grand Prairie' from Lonoke will be featured both days.

Led by dobro-picker Rodger King, the group features a big variety of traditional bluegrass as well as some selected contemporary bluegrass numbers. The group has literally played dozens of festivals throughout the United States in the past 15 years.

A new addition to this year's festival will be 'Twice As Nice,' a Texarkana-based group which mixes smooth harmony with comedy antics. "Twice As Nice,' will be featured Saturday, May 9, for two shows.

Featured on Friday, May 8, will be 'Welch Mountain,' an Eagletown, Okla., group which visited Hope several years ago to play the Watermelon Festival.

Other groups to be featured both days will include 'Shine-On' from Waldo, Barkman Creek from Texarkana and two groups from Hope, the Hempstead County Melody Boys and Lazy U Bluegrass.

Persons who wish to bring their RV's may want to stay in the city of Hope's RV park, which is located in Fair Park where the Bluegrass Festival is to be held. Persons who wish to make reservations at the park or who wish to inquire about rates can call the park office at 870- 777-7500.

Jam sessions will be held during the festival and no alcohol or drugs will be allowed.

For more information, call the chamber at 870-777-3640.
