Patriotism abounds in GurdonBY AUTUMN PENNINGTONPublished Wednesday, October 3, 2001 in the Gurdon Times In the past two weeks we have seen Americans come alive with patriotism. Red, white and blue ribbons cascade from car antennas and front doors of houses. Car windows have "God Bless America" written on them. You can't find an American flag for miles around. Some people are on waiting lists to receive flags. Prayer is back in our everyday "public" lives. These are just some examples of how everything has changed since the terrorists attacks on September 11. In many people's opinion these are changes for the better. However, one must wonder why it takes something so devastating to bring Americans together? Maybe it's the threat of having our freedom taken away and knowing that we have taken it for granted in the past. So many men and women have died for us to even have freedom. Can you imagine how it would feel to be one of those people who went to war and died so you and I can be free? Can you imagine how they would feel if they could see the way some so called "Americans" treat this country. You know they would feel they gave their lives for nothing. However if they could see us today they would probably smile knowing that Americans do know when and how to bind together. My only hope is that we do not forget how we have reacted to these recent tragedies and go back to the same unthankful manners we had before. It is also important to think of those who are in our armed forces right now. Many of them are from Gurdon and are stationed in areas just waiting for the word. The Times recently asked for names of individuals who are in the service and where they are stationed. Information on two people has been received. The first is Eric Nutt. Nutt is the son of Ricky and Carla Nutt of Curtis and the brother of Chad and Cody Cox. Nutt is part of the active Army Infantry and is stationed in Saudi Arabia. Brandon Jennings is the son of Vicki Jennings. He is in the Navy stationed on a ship outside of Afghanistan.
