Wolves lose 7-6 heartbreaker to Gurdon, part II

Plyler took a knee to end the half.

The Wolves took the ball to get the third period underway, with Decolen Prater fielding the kick at the eight, returning it to the 38 before being brought down.

A trap to Teague moved the ball to the 49, with Vanhook sweeping to the Gurdon 45.

Following a loss of two, and procedure call, Martin was picked off by Hart at the Devil's 45. He returned the interception to midfield.

Uthel Gaitlin, on second down, broke for a 20-yard gain, putting Gurdon at the Prescott 30.

It appeared as though the Devils were marching to the promised land as Gurdon's offense made it to the Prescott three before the Wolfpack "D" forced a fumble, recovered by Prescott at the five.

Josh Brown gave the Wolves some breathing room with a run to the 13, before Vanhook fumbled at the five with Gurdon recovering the loose ball.

Prescott's defense stood tall, catching Hart for a loss of six to the 19.

Plyler's passes fell incomplete on second and third down, with Gurdon lining up for a field goal on fourth down. The kick sailed wide right, with the score remaining 7-6 with 2:23 left in the third.

Flags flew all over the field on first down, as Gurdon was called for grabbing a facemask and Prescott was nailed for holding, negating an 11-yard gain by Craven.

When the down was replayed, Craven gained seven to the 27, with Woodley adding six on second down.

A holding call moved Prescott back to the 23, with Craven being caught for a loss to the 20 on first down.

A counter to Norwood moved the ball to the 28 as the third period came to an end with the score still 7-6 Gurdon.

Craven was stopped for no gain on third down as the final 12 minutes began, and Prescott was forced to punt.

Ward's kick was fielded by Williams at the Gurdon 38, with the return to the 43, where the Devil's offense began.

The Devils managed to break into Wolf territory at the 48 before Prescott's defense forced a punt.

A heavy rush sent Moseley into a scramble, but he managed to get the kick away, with it rolling to Prescott's two-yard line.

Teague gained six on first down, with Craven gaining three more on a sweep.

Teague helped the Wolves earn a first down gaining seven to put the ball at the 18.

A counter to Norwood, though, lost ground to the 16. Two more plays saw the Wolves lose ground back to the 13 where they punted again.

Ward's kick made it to Gurdon's 47 with 5:58 left in the contest.

The Devils kept the ball the rest of the game, moving to Prescott's four as time ran out.

Statistically, Prescott ran 36 offensive plays, while Gurdon had 47 snaps.

Prescott was 0-6 in passing, with Gurdon connecting on two of five for 26-yards.

The Wolves ran the ball 30 times for 119 yards, while the Devils rushed 42 times for 152 yards.

In total yardage, Prescott managed 119 yards, where the Devils had 178.

Prescott punted five times for 179 yards total, or an average of 35.8 yards per kick.

Gurdon punted twice for 76 yards, or a 38 yard per kick average.

Laundry fell five times against the Wolves for 30 yards, where the home Devils were penalized three times for 35 yards.

Plyler was sacked once by Prescott's defense, but Martin was caught twice for losses by the Devils.

The Wolves posted six first downs, where Gurdon managed 13.

The Wolves fumbled the ball once, losing it. Gurdon put the ball on the ground five times, losing it twice.

Vanhook led the Wolves in rushing, carrying the ball 11 times for 78 yards.

Martin's two sacks lost 20 yards for Prescott, while Teague added 35 yards on seven carries.

Woodley gained five yards on three runs, while Craven added 15 yards on three carries. Norwood had six yards on two rushes.

The Wolves will return to the friendly confines of Cummins Stadium Friday night as they play host to the Bismarck Lions.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
