Big Star staying in spite of rumorsBy Autumn PenningtonPublished Wednesday, August 8, 2001 in the Gurdon Times Thomason's Big Star has no plans of selling out and leaving Gurdon. In the past few weeks rumors have been circulating around town that our only local grocery might have been sold to someone else. After speaking with store owner Terry Thomason this past Thursday, it is evident that he has no plans to sell his Gurdon store. Thomason said he had recently been approached by some people from Arkansas who were looking to buy some grocery stores in this area. Thomason said, "I think it is just good business to see what someone has to offer you when approached with a business deal. If your business looks good and your doing good business it is only natural for someone else to be interested in it." Thomason said Gurdon can expect one major change in its store. For the past few years Big Star has received its grocery items from Fleming Distributors out of Memphis. However, Affiliated Foods has been trying to win Thomason's business for quite some time. Thomason said they had finally offered him a deal he agreed on. "I think this is a positive change for the store. Affiliated Foods comes out of Little Rock instead of Memphis," he said, Thomason said he knew some of the shelves look really bare at this time and he plans to have new items on the shelves within the next four to five weeks. "Right now we are trying to sell all of the items that are distributed by Fleming so we can replenish with Affiliated products," Thomason said. Thomason has been involved in the grocery business for 32 years. In this time Thomason said he considers Gurdon to be his second home. Thomason and his wife Sherry live in Bismarck where they have another Big Star grocery store. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
