Gurdon's 9-10-year-old All-Star baseball team walked away with the district championship trophy Friday night in Fordyce.

To the coaches knowledge this is the first time the 9-10-year-olds have one a district championship.

The team, coached by Ricky Griffin, Larry Thomerson and Josh Griffin, started the week by defeating Fordyce in an extra inning game on Friday, June 30th.

Gurdon advanced to win again Sunday afternoon in a blowout game against Sparkman. This game ended in the fourth inning due to the 10-run rule.

The All-Stars returned to Fordyce on Tuesday, July 3, to take on Bearden. Bearden proved to be a worthy opponent but the Gurdon team held tough to remain in the winners bracket of the tournament.

The final score was 11-10, Gurdon.

The finals of the tournament saw a rematch between Gurdon and Bearden. Gurdon relied on good pitching and solid hitting as they had the entire tournament.

The Gurdon team was in the winners bracket and would have had to be beaten twice to be eliminated from the tournament. This scene never materialized as Gurdon never looked back defeating Bearden again by a score of 12-9.

The 9-10-year-old All-Stars will represent Gurdon in the state tournament which will also be held in Fordyce.

Gurdon will play at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 14.

The opponent for the first game is not known at this time.
