Library programs aboundAutumn PenningtonPublished Wednesday, July 4, 2001 in the Gurdon Times If you're a child looking for something to do this summer, or a parent looking for something to get your children out of the house, the Cabe Library has the answer for you. The library is full of fun and exciting events this summer. The main event is the summer reading program,"A Reading Odyssey". This program is for independent readers only. The summer reading program kicked-off on June 12 and will end on July 24th when the children who have read at least one book will receive a certificate, and special prizes will be given to the readers reporting their books, along with a prize for the "Reading Odyssey Class". Any child can still participate with the program although it has already begun. The Reading Odyssey class is held every Tuesday at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. This is a fun class for all the children registered in the summer reading program. During class the readers play games, work on many different activities and work on crafts pertaining to the topic being discussed. This past Tuesday, June 26, the class made beaded necklaces to go along with the topic of Egyptian jewelry making. They also wrote on the sidewalk with chalk to help encourage others to join the program with them. Along with all the games and fun there are also weekly prizes given away to participants who are present that day, and this makes them eligible for a special prize to be given away on July 24 at the awards ceremony. Tuesday mornings are full of fun when 10 o'clock rolls around. This is the time children, ages 3-6, are welcome to join in on story time. Story time includes the reading of a book by the librarian and then songs and scenes are acted out to go along with the story. Coloring pages are popular with the children and are used as window decorations for the rest of the week. This program also offers a prize each week. Sonic has donated prizes for the children and so have the Red-E-Marts with their Icee's. The Museum of Discovery has joined together with the library to put together a program every Wednesday afternoon at 3. The name of this program is the N.E.S.A. Science Program. A representative from the Museum of Discovery comes down and spends an hour with the children teaching them different science facts, different countries and the animals found there. There is usually a live animal to show the children as well. While some may think they are too old to enjoy these programs, they can always come in and check-out a book or use the computer to hunt for information.
