FORDYCE 10

Published Wednesday, April 21, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

PRESCOTT 0 It was a case of the same song, second verse when the Wolves went to Fordyce to close out the regular season, and fell 10-0.

Prescott sandwiched a pair of singles around three strikeouts in the first, while the Redbugs scored twice on a double and two singles.

Inning two saw Ronnie Nolen lead off with a walk and remain at first as the next three went down.

The second was a big inning for the 'Bugs as four runs scored. Scoring began with a homer.

A walk and single put two on board for the next big knock, a three-run shot to put Fordyce up 6-0.

Inning three was quiet as neither team seriously threatened.

Prescott got the bases loaded in the top of the fourth and looked to be on the verge of getting back into the game.

Miller singles and Nolen reached on an error before the first out came by way of strikeout. Angelo Haynes walked to load the bases, but cold bats prevailed as the trio were left stranded.

The 'Bugs first batter went down on strikes, while the next reached on an error. Consecutive doubles brought two in to put the score at 8-0.

There was an exciting play as the runner at second went to third and tried to score on an errant throw home. However, Prescott's catcher got control of the horsehide and tagged the runner out.

But two walks and a single allowed two more to score and give Fordyce a 10-0 lead.

Yates managed a single amid three strikeouts in the top of the fifth as the game came to an end.

Weatherly was the winning pitcher, going the distance. He gave up no runs on five hits, walked two and struck 11 out.

Nolen went four innings for the Wolves, allowing 10 runs on nine hits, with four walks and three strikeouts.

The 'Bugs took the JV game 6-3.

Two out scoring continued to hurt the Wolves, Crow said. Seven of Fordyce's 10 runs came with two down.

"Good teams can do this," he said, "score with big hits and not leave runners stranded."

The 'Bugs left a total of three runners on board during the game, while Prescott stranded eight.

"We couldn't get the big hit when we needed it with runners on base," he said. "They only outhit us 9-5.

"Actually, we didn't play as bad as the score would indicate. We played one of our better games of the year against a team likely to finish as district champions, probably tied with Nashville and De Queen."

Nolen, he said, pitched a good game when he kept the ball down. When he got the ball up, he was hurt.

Three of the four 'Bugs who walked scored, while five of Fordyce's nine hits were for extra bases.
