DE QUEEN 13

Published Wednesday, April 21, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

PRESCOTT 0 Offense was lacking for the Wolves Monday, April 12, when they visited De Queen, the number four team in AAA.

The Leopards, though, had more than enough punch to sent Prescott packing 13-0 in five innings.

Twice in the first inning the Wolves loaded the bases, but were unable to bring in a runner.

Brad Harris and Jarrod Yates walked, around a Josh Bullock single to pack the bags early.

The Leopards attempted a pick off play at first, with Harris trying to score from third, only to be called out on a close and controversial play.

Gabe Morman reloaded the bases with his single, but all three were left as the next two batters were retired.

The Leopards put six on the board in the bottom of the inning.

The frame saw De Queen with two walks and three singles, while the Wolves committed an error allowing two runs to score.

It was three up and three down for the Wolves in the top of the second, while the home team added a pair to its tally.

The inning began with a walk and single, with the advance runner being caught at second. Back-to-back singles brought two more runners across for the Leopards.

Inning number three was quiet for both teams as neither was able to mount much offense.

Jarrod Miller reached on an error to start the fourth, but was left as the next three batters were retired.

Scoring was completed in the bottom of the inning for the Leopards as they sent five around the basepaths.

De Queen scored on two walks, a pair of doubles and twin singles.

Prescott went down in order in the fifth.

McCullough went the distance for De Queen, giving up no runs on three hits, walking two and fanning 10.

Bullock spent four innings on the hill. He gave up 13 runs on 12 hits, walked seven and struck three out.

The Leopards also won the junior varsity game with a 4-1 score.

"It's starting to sound like a broken record," Prescott Coach Steve Crow said. "We can't stay away from the big inning. We loaded the bases in the top of the first and couldn't score.

"De Queen scores six in the bottom of the first; a pretty big letdown right off the bat. We continued to battle throughout the game."

Crow said Bullock pitched well and didn't back down from De Queen batters.

"De Queen's got a good, solid ball club," he said. "They wouldn't be ranked No. 4 if they didn't. They start seven seniors and we start five first-year players or sophomores. This proved to be a big difference in the ball game.

"The effort was there and our team realizes the experience we will have back next year. The future looks brighter."
