Lightning hits; damages houseBy John MillerPublished Wednesday, June 6, 2001 in the Gurdon Times A lightning strike resulted in the burning of a local house. According to Gurdon Fire Chief Jake McBride, lightning struck the home of Roosevelt May Sunday, May 27, around 10:30 p.m. May was out of town at the time. McBride said there had been a "big lightning strike" about 10 minutes before the call came in about the structure fire on Smithton Road. Two trucks and crews responded, battling the flames for about two hours before getting the fire put out. But, the May home suffered damage to the front porch and a front bedroom, McBride said. At the time of the fire, it wasn't raining, he added, with some of the firemen mentioning they could use some help with a rain shower. A little later, the rains fell, heavily. May, according to McBride, had some insurance on the frame structure, but not much. There were no injuries due to the fire. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
