Gurdon Water Department manager Harold Hurst announced last week at the Water and Sewer Commission meeting that his department has received funds from FEMA. The first check from FEMA totaling $3,622.50.

The newest commissioners, Glenn Hughes and Jim Vance, were informed on the history of the search for a generator for the department to purchase.

An ironic situation was told during the meeting relating to the ice storm in December. If the department could have bought the generator they are looking for during the actual ice storm the $14,000 piece of machinery would have been completely paid for by FEMA. But since the generator purchase is in preparation in the event of another disaster, the agency turned the department down for the funds.

Hurst will, however, have the majority of the funds for the purchase and a copy of the specifications will be ready for advertising by next month's meeting.

The construction of the drive-through for the water department has hit a snag of sorts. The department will need to pitch in $2,473.23 to provide themselves with a more adequate window unit. The grant funding the new construction at the Gurdon Municipal Building ran short with a used substandard window to be provided for the departments use, according to Hurst. Thus the department is picking up half the tab for a new window.
