Sterling Square Becomes New Park's NameBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, May 23, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune Meredith DeWoody submitted the winning name for the pocket park where the mural is. It's name Sterling Square. Mary Godwin, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, said there had been 33 names submitted for the park. The beautification committee went through the names, narrowing them down to two -- Sterling Square and Whistle Stop Park. At this point, the committee thought the public should make the final selection. DeWoody, in writing about the name, said Sterling's had been the only five and dime store in the county when she was a child, and has many fond memories of shopping there. "It represented all that was good in small town shopping," she wrote, "and how it should be." DeWoody won $50 for having the winning entry, but returned the money to be used at the park.
