GHS Jazz Band CompetesPublished Wednesday, May 23, 2001 in the Gurdon TimesThe mighty jazz band from Gurdon High School recently competed in a Jazz Band Festival and Contest where it earned a superior rating, the highest rating possible. In fact, all three judges awarded the band a superior rating, plus an outstanding soloist award for bass player Bradley Weems, who is a junior at GHS. The same day several students from the beginner, intermediate and high school bands participated in solo and ensemble contest in Redwater, Texas. Four entries earned a second division while all the other entries, at least 50 of them, earned a superior rating. Gurdon had the highest percentage of first divisions in the entire contest. The combined beginner and intermediate band entered the band portion of the contest and it earned a superior rating. "Thanks to all of the students who attended and especially for the chaperones," Allen Wimberly said. "A great time was had by all and the directors thank the students for being such good citizens and representing Gurdon in such a positive manner," he concluded.
