A member of the top ten graduates at Gurdon High School, Cassie Ross will be attending Arkansas Tech University at Russellville next fall. She has received a Presidential Scholarship from Tech.

She is the daughter of Robert and Bonnie Ross of Gurdon.

Kenneth O'Connell has been awarded a Presidential Scholarship at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. He was a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society at Gurdon High School.

O'Connell is the son of Bill and Nina O'Connell and grandson of Carmen Nicholson and the late Billy Nicholson and Eileen Campbell, all of Gurdon. He is a member of the Calvary United Pentecostal Church of Gurdon.

Aimee Hughes of Gurdon received her post-graduate degree Saturday, May 19, at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. The commencement exercises were held at Barton Coliseum.

In all there were 87 individuals receiver their post-graduate degrees.

Lynette Schoonover of Liberty Texas, formerly of Gurdon, graduated cum laude with an associate degree of applied science in nursing from Lee College in Baytown, Texas.

She received the 2001 Clincial Excellence Award, was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, as well as being named to the national dean's list for 1999-2001. She is married to James Schoonover, also formerly from Gurdon. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Read Patterson of Fulton. Ms. Schoonover is employed with San Jacinto Methodist Hospital as a staff RN on the medical nursing.

Russell Barfield, son of Jimmy Barfield of Texarkana, and grandson of Ella Fay Barfield of Gurdon, was presented with the degree of doctor of medicine on May 19 at the U.S. University of Health Sciences in Washington, D.C.

Russell will begin his five-year residency in Hawaii at Tripler Army Medical Center.

Tiffany Edwards, a 1999 graduate of Gurdon High School, has completed a two-year study at the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope. She also obtained a diploma for physical therapy aide in July of 2000.

Chad Edwards, a 2001 graduate of Gurdon High School and Tiffany's brother, will begin furthering his education this summer.

Proud parents of Tiffany and Chad are Jimmy and Peggy Edwards of Gurdon.

Tasha R. Boozer, Teresa L. Jester, Kara M. Thomas, Jeffrey L. Williams and Melanie D. Wilson, all of Gurdon, have been named to the Henderson State University's dean's list for the spring semester.

Dean's list requires a 4.0 grade point average.

Bryan E. Anderson, Terrie G. Babineaux, Chady D. Calley, Misty L. Calley, Bethany S. Cooper, Jason M. Cuce, Carla P. Jester, James O. Newberry Jr. and Deborrah E. Shepherd, all of Gurdon, have been named to the honor roll at HSU.

Honor roll requires a 3.5 grade point average for the semester.
