Club NewsDR. BARBARA HOLTPublished Wednesday, May 23, 2001 in the Gurdon Times When we think about concerns and issues that face families, education always seems to come to the forefront. There is good reason for this. Education has and always will be the key to long term solution or problem prevention. Most people associate education with the classroom setting and the school system. Education also means becoming equipped with skills necessary to carry out the business of life. To become a productive, involved, caring citizen who will have a positive influence on his or her community, learning life skills is important. The opportunity for an education of this type is available today through membership in Extension homemaker clubs located in over 650 communities in Arkansas. Members in these clubs meet monthly and provide educational programs on issues of concern to families today. Focus in programs for the past year has been on women's health with emphasis on heart disease and diabetes, with a secondary emphasis on family violence. This focus offers many opportunities for programs to help establish healthy lifestyles for women and men. Programs are planned at the local level to address local needs. The Extension homemaker's program has three major objectives: 1) provide education to individuals and families to help them improve and develop skills for a better quality of life, 2) promote community service projects that serve others in need and foster better communities, and 3) develop leadership skills to help each person reach his or her potential. All of these objectives support individual growth and promote better quality of life for families in Arkansas. Extension homemakers are located in every county in Arkansas, including Clark County. If you want to join a group, or just want to visit one of their meetings contact these club presidents: DeGray EHC - Clara Joiner (246-2962), second Wednesday at 1 p.m. Hartsville EHC - Ruth Boyd (246-5533), second Thursday at 1 p.m. Manchester EHC - Ima Rainwater (366-4305), third Wednesday at 1 p.m. Oakland EHC - Ruie McCallum (246-8832), second Tuesday at 8 a.m. Pioneer EHC - Betty Lowther (246-5107), second Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Red Springs EHC - Alta Dempsey (353-2684), second Thursday at 10 a.m. South Central EHC - Carolyn Shell (246-9362), second Monday at 7 p.m. South Fork EHC - Jo Wells (353-6415), second Tuesday at 1 p.m. Whelen Springs - Nedra Williams (353-4243), third Thursday at 1 p.m. Quilters Guild - Marie Gravett (246-7367), first Thursday at 9 a.m. For more information on Extension Homemakers and their activities or meetings contact the Clark County Extension office at 501 Clay Street in Arkadelphia or call (870) 246-2281.
