Bluff City News

I don't have much news this week. In a small community such as this most everyone knows all the news anyway. This column is mainly for the benefit of former residents of this area who enjoy reading about a place they remember from days gone by. It is also a way to preserve a bit of history for future generations. Who knows your descendants may read this column 100 years from now looking for a little tidbit of information about you. Don't you wish you knew a lot more about your ancestors who lived 100 years ago?

I wish someone had recorded the Bluff City news 150 years ago so we

would know what this place was like back then. We did have some local news columns, but they were very sporadic. We have very little information recorded before 1900, and we know Bluff City was around as far back as 1850. That means that much of our history has been completely

lost, because nobody bothered to write it down.

The crews picking up limbs from the ice storm finally made it to Bluff

City last week. It makes the roads look better with all the debris gone. Now if we could just find a pesticide

to get rid of the litterbugs.

I hear Mrs. Doris Hildebrand has some smart squirrels at her place. Instead of building a nest in a tree as most squirrels do, these used one of her birdhouses for a nest. I guess it could be that the birds are smart too and are charging the squirrels rent on the birdhouse.

News from October 1929. The senior class officers at Bluff City School are Bill Nichols, president; Laura Gillespie, vice president; Gladys Merritt, secretary; Dovie Black, treasurer; and Mary DeWoody, reporter.

The junior class officers are Helen Harvey, president; Ineta Henry, vice president; Marie Hildebrand, secretary and treasurer; and Sula Nichols and Clyde Moore were the reporters.

A thought: People are certainly peculiar They want to sit in the front of the bus, in the back of the church, and hog the middle of the road.
