With warm weather and long days here again many people are outside mowing yards and hayfields. Common sense tells us what we should or shouldn't do when operating machinery. However, from time to time we all need some reminders about safety when it comes to tractors and other heavy machinery.

A little extra time taken to do a job safely might just mean several years added to your life.

Listed below are a few safety tips taken from the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service Fact Sheet FSA 1026 Safe Tractor Operation" written by Gary Huitink, Extension Agricultural Engineer. Just to refresh your memory:

Securely fasten your seat belt if the tractor has a roll-over orotective Structure (ROPS).

If there is any other alternative, avoid operating a tractor near ditches, embankments and holes.

Stay off slopes too steep for safe operation.

Keep tractor in gear when going downhill.

Don't let others ride.

Hitch only to the drawbar or the 3-point hitch with appropriate implements.

Never try to start a tractor when you are not in the seat.

Never leave the tractor with the power-take-off shaft (PTO) engaged.

Sometimes doing the safe thing is not the most convenient. However, the most convenient could turn out to be the most expensive or even the last thing you do.
