Four GHS Students Headed To Boys State

Four students from Gurdon High School were chosen to attend Boys State 2001. Boys State is a program sponsored by the American Legion.

Those attending are Wes Boyce, Bradley Weems, Adrian Gamble and Brent Overbey

During the time at Boys State, those attending will be involved in politics. Members of Boys State will run for various spots of fictitious counties, cities and districts. One will be elected Governor of Boys State.

The students will also spend time at the state capitol, performing tasks such as the real governor and lawmakers do.

Boyce is the son of James and Diana Boyce of Curtis. He is a member of Harmony Primitive Baptist Church in Donaldson.

Boyce is a member of the state champion FFA crops team, Beta Club and baseball team at GHS. He participated in the Close-Up program, traveling to Washington, D.C. His hobbies include hunting, fishing and four-wheeler riding.

Weems, 17,is the son of Gary and Maxime Weems. He is a member of Beech Street Baptist Church.

Weems is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Upward Bound, math and science, Close-Up program, jazz band and the Gurdon marching band.

Weems made the All-Region III concert band for three consecutive years on Tuba, Region III Jazz Band for two years on bass guitar, Four States Bandmasters Association, honor band and South Arkansas Youth wind ensemble.

Weems says he is very honored to be selected as a delegate to the 2001 Arkansas Boys State.

Gamble, 17, is the son of Virginia and Deloy McClure.

He enjoys all kinds of sports, including football, basketball, hunting and fishing. He is a proud member of the Beta Club.

Gamble's plans for after high school are going to college and majoring in marine biology.

Overbey is the son of Tommy and Vivian Overbey.

He is the a member of the Beta Club and FFA, and he was on the state winning FFA crops team 2001.

Gamble enjoys hunting, fishing and four-wheeler riding.
